Nelder Grove of Giant Sequoias, a Granddaughter’s Stories
by Brenda L. Negley
Discover the quaint historic area of Nelder Grove, tucked into the Sierra National Forest just south of Yosemite National Park’s Mariposa Grove.
Five miles as the eagle flies, away from the crowds of Yosemite, Nelder Grove is a magical land where history lives in 1,540 acres of wilderness. Historically Nelder Grove had 299 mature giant sequoias, due to logging, mainly for fence posts, some that tipped over, and the recent loss of 39 mature trees due to fire, we now have 60 left. a tree larger by mass than any other living thing, Nelder Grove stands as an ancient witness to time, a towering canopy for seekers of adventure, beauty, and understanding of the natural world.
Brenda Negley spends countless hours exploring the grove and researching its past. As granddaughter of campground hosts John and Marge Hawksworth, she is uniquely able to tell the Nelder story. With childhood memories of its creeks, trials and logging roads, and her own stint as a camp host, Brenda shares her knowledge in the most comprehensive book available on Nelder Grove. Included are tips on camping, picnicking, hiking, and spending time in appreciation of one of the most fascinating places on earth.
